We present the case of a 48-year-old female suffering from central pain-like syndrome (CPS). Her symptoms included allodynia and hyperalgesia in her trunk and all 4 extremities. However, she did not have a known primary neurological insult as is classically seen in central pain syndrome. Her symptoms were more a consequence of a severe case of central sensitization in the setting of chronic pain. She had failed multiple conventional treatments including many oral and topical medications (gabapentin, pregabalin, paroxetine, tramadol, Percocet, lidocaine cream, compound topical ointments), chiropractic care and physical therapy including desensitization therapy and a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation unit trial. Acupuncture was then offered as a treatment, and her multiple complaints were catalogued and tracked/evaluated at each acupuncture session. With each session, her overall pain and hypersensitivities were significantly reduced. Though central sensitization with chronic pain can be difficult to manage, acupuncture can be an effective option when conventional treatments fail.
